Some cells will not settle on bare plastic. Primary cells, stem cells, and anything you are moving into serum-free or low-serum medium often need a protein surface to grab before they spread and grow. Universal Coating Solution gives them one.
Universal Coating Solution is a sterile, ready-to-use cell culture coating solution with a proprietary, protein-based ECM formulation. Coat flasks, dishes, plates, or coverslips in as little as an hour, rinse once, and seed as usual. Every lot is functionally tested on human fibroblasts for viability and proliferation.
Recommended use: Rapid cell adhesion and spreading, improved survival in serum-free or low-serum culture, and expansion of attachment-sensitive cells.
Applications
- Rapid cell adhesion and spreading
- Improved survival in serum-free or low-serum culture
- Expansion of attachment-sensitive cells
- Coating flasks, dishes, plates, and coverslips

| Format | 20 mL, liquid (vial) |
| Product Type | ECM coating solution (extracellular matrix) |
| Formulation | Proprietary protein-based extracellular matrix (ECM) formulation; sterile, ready to use |
| Appearance | Clear to slightly translucent, colorless liquid |
| pH | 7.2 to 7.6 |

Protocol
Use enough solution to cover the growth surface. The volumes below are starting points.
Example coating volumes
| Vessel | Growth area | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| T-75 flask | 75 cm² | 2 to 4 mL |
| 6-well plate | 9.6 cm² | 500 µL per well |
Coating steps
- 1Equilibrate. Bring the solution to room temperature (15°C to 25°C). Do not warm in a water bath.
- 2Coat. Add enough solution to cover the growth surface, for example 2 to 4 mL per T-75 flask or 500 µL per well of a 6-well plate.
- 3Incubate. 37°C for at least 60 minutes. For stronger attachment, incubate 2 hours at 37°C, or overnight at 2°C to 8°C.
- 4Aspirate. Remove the remaining coating solution immediately before use.
- 5Rinse (recommended). Rinse once gently with sterile DPBS (KM-DPBS-1), HBSS (KM-HBSS-1), or serum-free medium to remove unbound protein.
- 6Plate. Seed cells onto the coated surface following your standard protocol.
Quality Control
Every lot is tested before release:
- Functional testing with human fibroblasts: viability and proliferation assays pass
- Sterility: pass
- Mycoplasma: negative
- Endotoxin: < 0.5 EU/mL
- pH verified against specification
Lot-specific results are on the Certificate of Analysis. Email us to request the CoA and include your lot number from the bottle or vial label.
Storage & Shipping
| Shipping Condition | Refrigerated, 2°C to 8°C |
| Storage Temperature | 2°C to 8°C. Protect from light. |
| Stability | 1 year from the date of manufacture when stored correctly and kept sterile. Expiry date is on the vial label. |
| Do Not | Do not use a vial that has frozen in transit, or a solution that looks cloudy or contains visible particulates. |
| Important | Do not freeze. Freezing denatures the coating proteins and makes the solution ineffective. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I rinse after coating?
Yes, once is recommended. Rinse gently with sterile DPBS (KM-DPBS-1), HBSS (KM-HBSS-1), or serum-free medium to remove unbound protein, then seed.
How long should I coat?
At least 60 minutes at 37°C. For stronger attachment, go 2 hours at 37°C or overnight at 2°C to 8°C.
Can I use it for coating coverslips for cell culture?
Yes. It is formulated for flasks, dishes, plates, and coverslips. Add enough to cover the coverslip surface, incubate, aspirate, rinse once, and seed.
Can I warm it in a water bath?
No. Let it come to room temperature on the bench before coating.
Should I use this or Xbind?
Use Universal Coating Solution for a wide range of adherent cells, including primary cells, stem cells, and immortalized lines. Use Xbind when you need a defined, xeno-free surface for feeder-free human iPSC maintenance.
The solution looks cloudy.
Do not use it. Contact us and we will replace it.
